Built for the weather
An outdoor fire changes what a garden is for. A terrace that emptied at dusk in April stays in use until the rain sets in, and comes back in September; a pool deck has somewhere to sit after the swim; a covered porch becomes the room the house did not have. The gas fires here need no flue, no wood and, in most cases, no wiring: a gas line to the wall or a propane tank inside the table, and a switch.
Regency builds its outdoor line in Delta, British Columbia: the Horizon HZO42 and HZO60 fireplaces, the Plateau burners that join into runs of up to 100 inches, and a fire table with the propane tank inside. Urbana, also built in British Columbia, makes the traditional U44 and the U60 and U74 linear fires that can be seen from both sides of a garden wall, and a family of Halo fire pits. And for the wood purist, the Morsø Kamino: 1.8 metres of Danish cast iron, an upright fireplace that stands in the garden like a sculpture.
Outdoors, placement is everything. Wind decides which way the fire faces; the gas line decides where it can sit; the stone or the stucco around it decides its clearances; and the sightline from the kitchen window decides whether it gets used. Maxwell Fireplace plans all of that with you: choosing the fire, drawing it on the terrace, planning the gas run and the framing to the maker’s drawings, pulling the permit, and installing the fireplace with our own crew. The masonry, the paving and the seating walls we plan together with the trades doing it — yours, or ones we bring in. Questions people tend to ask
Does an outdoor gas fireplace need a chimney or a vent?
No. Outdoor fires are made to burn in the open air, so there is no flue to run. What they need is a gas supply, natural gas run to the spot or propane, and the clearances to any roof, wall or overhang that the maker’s manual specifies, which matter most on a covered porch.
Will it stand up to the rain?
They are built for it: stainless burners and weatherproof fireboxes rated for outdoor installation. A cover for the off-season is still a good idea, and a fire table with the tank inside wants the tank shut off between uses.
Natural gas or propane?
Natural gas if the house has it and the run to the terrace is reasonable; it costs less to burn and never runs out. Propane where the fire sits far from the house or has to move, which is what a fire table with the tank inside is for. We tell you which, and plan the line.
Can the fire be seen from both sides?
Yes. Urbana’s U60 and U74 are built to sit in a garden wall and be seen from both faces, and Regency’s Plateau burners sit in an enclosure you build, open on every side. The Horizon fireplaces and the U44 face one way, for the wall at the end of the terrace.
