Read Full Article →Did you know that you can no longer burn your old fashioned, open, brick chimney fireplace in Greater Vancouver? In the last 4 years, the Metro Vancouver regional government took steps in implementing regulations that have phased out wood burning fireplaces and appliances that do not meet emission standards.
Today a wood burning appliance must meet certain performance standards, as set out by Metro Vancouver, to ensure emissions are low. Users residing in Metro Vancouver's Urban Containment Boundary (UCB Map) are required to register their wood burning fireplace or appliance with Metro Vancouver and cannot use unregistered wood burning appliances within urban areas except in cases where households qualify as low income or in the event of emergency.
Thanks to technical advancements in wood burning free-standing stoves, fireplace inserts and built in fireplaces, you can still enjoy wood burning options without impacting the environment and its air quality — whether building a new home or renovating.
Maxwell Fireplace offers a variety of certified residential indoor wood burning options bearing a certification mark that conforms to the Canadian standard and meet the EPA regulations required by Metro Vancouver. These low emission appliances heat well and are fuel efficient using the renewable resource, wood.

A gas fireplace insert is one of the most efficient and reliable ways to heat your home — and with the right care, it will provide years of comfortable, worry-free warmth. At Maxwell Fireplace, we recommend a simple but consistent maintenance routine to keep your unit running at peak performance all year long. Annual Professional Servicing Having your fireplace professionally serviced once a year is the single best thing you can do for its longevity and efficiency. Our certified technicians at Maxwell Fireplace will thoroughly inspect your burner, ignition system, venting, and gas connections — and as part of every service visit, we also perform a CO and gas leak test to give you added peace of mind.
Clean the glass regularly, a light hazy film on the glass is completely normal over time. Use a fireplace-specific glass cleaner and a soft cloth to keep it clear and looking its best. Always allow the unit to cool completely before cleaning. Burner and Log Care Dust and debris can gradually settle on the burner and decorative logs. A soft brush or a gentle burst of compressed air is all it takes to keep things tidy. When in doubt, refer to your Valor or Regency owner's manual before adjusting log placement, as positioning can affect flame performance. Don't overlook the batteries, it's a simple step that's easy to forget — but fresh batteries in your remote control and receiver are essential to keeping your fireplace responding reliably. If your unit is slow to start or the remote feels unresponsive, fresh batteries are always the first thing to check before calling for service. Keep vents clear a quick seasonal check of your venting and air intake goes a long way. Make sure there are no obstructions such as debris or nesting from the warmer months, and that airflow remains unrestricted.
Test the controls, take a moment to test the ignition, remote, and thermostat controls periodically. If anything seems off — an unusual flame, a delayed start, or an unfamiliar smell — give us a call and we'll take a look. At Maxwell Fireplace, we are proud to carry and service both Valor and Regency gas fireplace inserts — two of the most trusted names in the industry. Whether you need routine maintenance, a repair, or are considering a new installation, our team is here to help.
